Maintenance — What Each Floor Actually Needs

For day-to-day cleaning, hybrid flooring asks very little. Sweep or vacuum regularly, damp mop as needed, and the floor stays in condition. No specialist products, no restrictions on wet mopping. You can even use a steam mop on Duracore® on low settings. It is genuinely a set-and-forget surface.

Engineered timber requires more considered care. Regular sweeping prevents grit from scratching the finish. Cleaning should use a timber-specific product rather than generic household cleaners, and excess water should never be left pooling on the surface. Periodic recoating typically every 7–10 years depending on traffic maintains the protective finish and keeps the wood looking its best.

Neither regime is onerous, but the difference matters for households where simplicity is a priority. If low maintenance ranks highly on your list, hybrid delivers with less effort.

Underfloor Heating Compatibility

Both hybrid and engineered timber are compatible with underfloor heating systems a relevant consideration as UFH becomes increasingly common in New Zealand new builds and renovations.

Hybrid flooring's limestone-based core conducts heat efficiently, distributing warmth evenly across the floor surface with or without underfloor heating. The cross-layered construction resists the warping that solid timber suffers under thermal cycling. Oak, maple, and ash are commonly recommended species for their dimensional stability. As with hybrid, keep the floor surface below 27°C and maintain indoor humidity between 40–60% to protect the wood. Follow the flooring installation manual in relation to UFH, particularly when starting the heating system from cold.

The practical difference is underfoot feel. Sustainability — Natural vs Synthetic

Sustainability is increasingly part of the flooring conversation, and the two products sit at opposite ends of the spectrum.

Engineered timber is a natural, renewable product. The hardwood veneer comes from managed forests FSC or PEFC certification provides assurance of responsible sourcing and the cross-layered plywood base makes efficient use of the timber resource compared to solid hardwood. Can hybrid flooring look as good as real timber?
